An O-ring may fail under certain conditions. American Seal and Packing wants to ensure your O-ring will not fail during application. We will educate users on the possible failures that may occur. Possible failuresinclude: Extrusion and Nibbling, Spiral Failure, Abrasion, Compression Set, Weathering or Ozone Cracking Set, Installation Damage, Chemical Degradation, and Explosive Decompression. Note that these are possible failures, and not a complete list. Failures to extrusion and nibbling is generally associated with dynamic rod or piston seals. Spiral failures are generally associated with long stroke piston seals. Abrasion failure is typically associated with dynamic applications. Compression set failure may happen in both static and dynamic applications, with excessive temperature being a common cause. Weathering and ozone cracking may occur in both static and dynamic applications. A common cause is choosing the wrong material for the application. Installation damage may occur because of improper use of installation tools and incorrect gland dimensions. Chemical degradation is commonly experienced because of improper material selection. Explosive decompression may occur if the absorption of gas is accompanied with pressure and lack of escape on decompression.
